If you need a simple work-from-home capsule wardrobe, you’re in the right place! I’ve rounded up the essential pieces you need in your closet to build a cozy work-from-home wardrobe. The goal is to be comfortable AND look put together!

Collage of different clothing pieces that are perfect for a work at home capsule wardrobe.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

The concept of a capsule wardrobe a simple: it’s just a few simple, versatile pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched to create lots of different outfits. Typically, the pieces you choose are from a similar color palette so they all easily work with one another.

I personally LOVE the idea of a capsule or minimalist wardrobe because instead of buying a bunch of new clothes and having “nothing to wear” (been there, done that), you have fewer clothes but they are all great staples that work with each other and you’ll have comfortable outfits to wear over and over.

Home wardrobe essentials

My idea of a work-from-home capsule wardrobe might be different than most of them out there. You’re not going to find blazers or uncomfortable button-down shirts in this work-from-home wardrobe. No way!

Most of us are probably work-at-home entrepreneurs (bloggers, content creators, etc.) with kids and families, so we need comfortable clothes that are practical, yet look put together. Yes, workout clothes are a good option sometimes, but since you own your business, I think you need to step it up a bit!

I am a HUGE advocate of getting dressed every single day, especially when you are working from home. Getting dressed in comfortable, yet work-appropriate attire can totally influence your mindset and productivity!

I’m a true believer in showering, putting on makeup (can be minimal, at least sunscreen!), and getting dressed every day. Putting on “work clothes” sets your intention for the day and distinguishes you as a business owner and not just someone shlepping around the house with a laptop 🙂

NOTE: The vast majority of the pieces I recommend below I OWN and LOVE!

Key Work-From-Home Pieces

Here are my key pieces in a work-from-home capsule wardrobe:

  • 3-4 comfortable bottoms
  • 3-4 comfortable tops
  • 3-4 layering pieces
  • 2-3 pairs of shoes
  • 3-4 accessories

3-4 comfortable bottoms

Choose 3-4 pairs of “pants” but make sure they are COMFY!!!!! No dress pants here!! I include some of my favorite options in the collage below.

  • 1-2 pairs of jeans: These MUST fit and be super comfy!!!!! Try, try, try until you find your perfect pair of jeans. I swear by Democracy and Wit and Wisdom. Try mixing in some neutral colors like beige or gray jeans.
  • Black leggings: Regular workout-type leggings are super versatile. Or opt for bootcut or wide-leg leggings to be on-trend (and comfy!).
  • Joggers: Joggers are ultra comfy and on-trend.
  • Comfy Pants (optional): If you can find a pair of “colored” jeans (like black or khaki) that are COMFY, they’re nice to have in your closet as well.

Here are my choices for comfy tops. I include some of my favorite options in the collage below.

  • White t-shirt (long sleeve or short sleeve): This is a great layering piece, too.
  • Waffle-style button down: I am SOOOO anti-white button down that all capsule wardrobes seem to include! Opt for a comfy, casual button-down instead.
  • Sweatshirt: Make sure it’s more-less fitted without a hood to minimize the frump factor.
  • 2 Comfy Sweaters: These are great for video calls and Zoom meetings when you have to show your top half and look put together 🙂

  • Cardigan or cozy cover-up: This type of piece can be dressed up or down, depending on accessories.
  • Jean jacket: I live and die by my classic denim jacket. Get one that fits well and throw on some nice earrings and you’re ready for your Zoom calls!

Here are my choices for shoes–no need for fancy shoes! I include some of my favorite options in the collage below.

  • Cozy Slippers: You will find me in these 99.9% of the time I work from home. They are my best friend! In the summer I opt for flip-flops, but this blog post is about COZY essentials so it’s slippers all the way!
  • Sneakers or Tennis Shoes: I know people wear slippers outside the house, but that’s a “no” for me! Opt for cute sneakers if you need to run to the grocery store or stroll outside.

  • Layered necklace: A dainty layered necklace will totally jazz up any outfit in a subtle “i’m not trying too hard” way.
  • 2-3 pairs of earrings: Have 1-2 smaller pairs to wear every day and then one pair that is more dressy for meetings.
  • Scarf (optional): Scarves may be on their way out, but finding a light, versatile scarf that can be thrown over a shirt or sweater is a nice way to look presentable for meetings, if needed.
  • Hat: Not everyone is a hat person, I get it. But they can be a Godsend to look halfway put together on a bad hair day!

Tips for building a solid WFH wardrobe

Make it your own
Use these clothing suggestions as guidelines to create your own personal capsule wardrobe that reflects your own personal style!

Neutral Colors
I like to stick with neutral colors for my bottoms and layering pieces and add color or patterns in the tops or accessories.

Quality over quantity
Opt for high-quality pieces that will last. This doesn’t mean you need Gucci or a cashmere sweater. But look for items that are good-quality, timeless pieces that will last. You can always mix in more trendy pieces here and there as you go.

Shop your closet and buy over time
Don’t feel rushed to buy an entire capsule wardrobe all at once. Shop your closet FIRST. See what you are missing. Then, shop for high-quality pieces you truly love (and that FIT). You will be so much happier if wait to buy what you truly love.

I hope this gives you a good idea of how to start a work-from-home capsule wardrobe! Feel free to share any of your favorite work-from-home pieces in the comments below!
