Beauty of Joseon Sunscreen: The Bottom Line

“Hands down, my new holy grail sunscreen!”

I have super sensitive skin–not acne-prone–but it just breaks out if I put almost anything new on it! Chemical sunscreens are the WORST on my skin so I was super skeptical trying out the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun. OMG- after years of white cast on my face from having to use mineral sunscreens, I have FINALLY found an alternative I love and that doesn’t break me out!

Product Description

From the Beauty of Joseon website:

Relief Sun is a lightweight and creamy type organic sunscreen that’s comfortable on skin. Even if you apply a large amount several times, it is not sticky and gives a moist finish like that of a light moisturizing cream. Containing 30% rice extract and grain-fermented extracts, it provides moisture and nourishment to the skin.

Relief Sun SPF 50 PA++++ Ingredients

I’ve listed the exact ingredients below, from the Beauty of Joseon website.

Knowing this was a “chemical sunscreen,” I was immediately skeptical because chemical sunscreens made in the United States basically HATE my skin! So I have been at the mercy of thick, gross mineral sunscreens and/or paying $40+ for Elta MD!

I thought all chemical sunscreens were created equal and boy, was I wrong! In studying the ingredients carefully, the U.S. chemical sunscreens contain one or more of the following active ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Oxybenzone.

If you have sensitive skin, those ingredients are the ingredients that break you out! The Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun uses different chemical (UV) filters: Tinosorb M and Tinosorb S. I am not a scientist, but I do know these do NOT break out my skin!

Beauty of Joseon also uses rice extract that makes it super creamy and provides hydration to your skin vs. drying it out like most sunscreens.

Complete ingredient list from the Beauty of Joseon website:

Scent, Appearance, and Feel

Scent: Elta MD is the only other sunscreen that I feel has no distinguishable scent. So if you can’t stand any scent in your sunscreen, you’re in luck with Beauty of Joseon! It’s totally fragrance-free.

Packaging: I happen to love the minimalist packaging. A cool beige color with black lettering. Most of the words are in Korean, just a heads up 🙂 The tube is 1.69 oz.

Appearance & Feel: This sunscreen has a medium-sheer texture and is super light and creamy. It blends like a dream, leaving a somewhat dewy finish and a nice, natural glow if you are wearing it alone.

I wore mine under my tinted moisturizer and everything blended flawlessly. It never feels heavy on my skin and gives just the right amount of hydration without making your skin look or feel greasy.

This sunscreen is made up of 30% Rice Extract + grain fermented extracts. Rice bran is rich in amino acids and minerals, helping to moisturize dry skin (Beauty of Joseon website).

Your Questions Answered

Here are a few commonly asked questions about the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Sunscreen (SPF 50 PA++++):

Beauty of Joseon sunscreen is a Korean sunscreen and is not FDA-approved. Different countries use different chemical filters to absorb UV rays. In the United States, we use filters such as avobenzone and oxybenzone (the ones that make me break out!!!).

Other countries use different types of filters that are not (yet!) approved here in the United States. That doesn’t make them unsafe, we just haven’t run enough of our own clinical trials here in the United States to approve these other filters.

The one downside to this sunscreen is that you can’t buy it on Amazon lol! I bought mine on iHerb.com and I consider them a reputable retailer.

Your best bet is to get it straight from the Beauty of Joseon website. Shipping is pricey ($14, but free for purchases over $100), but you know you’re getting the real deal.

Another great alternative that I know and LOVE is the SKIN1004 Centella sunscreen (also a Korean brand). It’s very similar to Beauty of Joseon in my experience…and you can buy it on Amazon!

Yes! Because it doesn’t use irritating sun filters like Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, and Oxybenzone, it really lessens the likelihood that sensitive skin will break out from this sunscreen.

However, all skin is different, so try it! The good news is, this sunscreen is super affordable compared to other American sunscreens!

I hope this Beauty of Joseon sunscreen review gives you a good idea of what it’s like and how it might work for you! It is honestly my new holy grail sunscreen–I hope you love it as much as I do! Let me know when you try it!
